SustainAbility Sets out Ecolabel Research Agenda

Posted 30 March 2011 by Jacob Malthouse to Collaboration, Ecolabel News | No Comments |

The UK Based Consultancy SustainAbility, one of the original thought leaders in the corporate responsibility slash environmental, social and governance arena, has released a white paper on ecolabels, trust and supply chains. The report is downloadable for free with registration, at the source link below.

The 11-page report is easily digestible and worth a read. It sets out a context, then examines trends and challenges facing ecolabels. We liked how the report integrates the broader sustainability supply chain and communications field, setting ecolabels up as a ‘keystone species’ within that space.

SustainAbility intends to examine some of the hard to crack issues ecolabels face including consumer trust and ecolabel performance.

We would be interested to understand, in particular, the trust issue within the context of institutional consumers (governments, companies, producers, etc.). Our experience is that ecolabels are increasingly used by professional purchasers at these institutions to ease friction around sustainability purchasing at scale. This in turn is driving spikes in demand for certified product, but also for transparency and accountability, as these purchasers are much more likely to dive deeper into a ecolabel’s operations than an individual consumer.

This links to the ecolabel performance issue, which as our feedback from ecolabels for our Global Ecolabel Monitor last year noted, is certainly a function of the operational capacity of the ecolabels themselves. We are interested to continue to explore ways that the broader community can work with ecolabels to enhance and diversify sources of funding, operational capacity improvements, and other things on their ‘wish-lists’ as part of seizing this opportunity to grow.

International Trade Centre Launches “Standards Map”

Posted 24 March 2011 by Jacob Malthouse to Ecolabel News | 1 Comment |

The International Trade Centre, a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation, has released “Standards Map “, an online database of voluntary standards.

Standards map now tracks 30 standards or codes of conduct and is accessible for a US$900 annual fee for developed country users. Developing country users can access the site for free until the end of this year. The site goes into depth on each standard and is accompanied by a resources section including relevant academic articles relating to those standards and issues being covered.

“ITC is planning to continue to add standards and also translate the site into French and Spanish by June 2011. Standards Map is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs.

In line with ITC’s mission, they target developing country users in particular and ITC has created a capacity building programme to run in tandem with the online platform. We look forward to working with the ITC and others in this field as we work to collaboratively grow green purchasing around the world.

The ISEAL 100 Survey Results

Posted 7 March 2011 by Jacob Malthouse to Ecolabel News, Opinion | No Comments |

We have been eagerly anticipating the results of the ISEAL 100 Survey (below). Today, we had a moment to plow through the results.

At 20 pages, it is a clear, readable and well compiled analysis. Well worth the short investment to read it.

Some of our favourite quotes and results:

73% would consider using more standards. We agree. When mapped across the whole of the MSCI for example, ecolabels cover only a fraction of the industries that make up an economy.

78% said ecolabels provide operational efficiencies. Indeed. We would expand this notion to include both brand and marketing or “demand side” efficiencies, as well as “supply side” efficiencies that arise from a more closely managed supply chain.

Quotes: “Standards are the easiest way to pass on advice to suppliers.” and “Standards allow us to speak the same language between companies”

49% believe diversity continues to be important in the ecolabel space. Our experience has been that, as in any healthy system, diversity is a sign of strength. Communication, transparency, and accountability remain key, but costs imposed by an ecolabel oligopoly outweigh those resulting from diversity.

What’s Behind Ecolabel Index Pro?

Posted 4 March 2011 by Jacob Malthouse to Ecolabel News | No Comments |

Last week we launched Ecolabel Index Pro, a unique online service that gives subscribers complete access to our database, including the profiles of over 370 ecolabels.

We launched this service so that we can to continue to invest in the data quality and features that make this site useful to people who use ecolabels as part of their profession.

By the end of this year, we expect to maintain profiles for more than 400 ecolabels. Each of these profiles contains nearly 70 individual points of information, for a total of 28,000 data-points.

In addition, we expect to continue to roll out new features for the site, especially the ability for ecolabels to claim their profiles and work with us directly to keep them updated.

We also continue to make minor improvements throughout the site. This includes things like speed, reliability, extensibility, and information display.

All of these improvements, as well as simply ongoing maintenance, carry a cost in terms of both time and capital. As Ecolabelling.org, this site was run on a purely voluntary basis for nearly three years (since December 2007). During that time, we explored many ways of balancing the need to keep the site open, while at the same time maintaining quality. In the end, we struck the balance that is Ecolabel Index Pro.

We hope that you will agree we have hit the mark. If you use this site regularly, we encourage you to sign-up and support our effort to make understanding and using ecolabels easier. For a small monthly contribution, you will help ensure that this site, and the world of green purchasing, continues to grow.

In the coming weeks we will be posting guided tours and explanations of the many features existing and planned for Ecolabel Index Pro. We hope you will be as enthusiastic as we are about its potential for facilitating credible green commerce.
